This is the third installment of Leadercast 2016 highlights.

CBS Sportscaster James Brown was one of my favorite speakers of the day. He shared his thoughts on what individuals bring to the table to support team success. As a bricklayer’s daughter, I was drawn in by his “depth before height” construction illustration, explaining that the heights you can reach – in building and in life – are determined by the depth of your foundation. The same can be said for teams. Any great team has a foundation of great individuals to build upon.

  • A good team member has the right priorities in the right order.
  • There are three criteria individuals should have that Brown labelled as “subjective”
    • Good communication – speaking, writing, listening
    • Good attire – proper dress makes a statement about you before you even open your mouth
    • Be on time – be prompt and be dependable
  • Develop an intellectual curiosity – invest in your own development, have a thirst for knowledge
  • Develop good interpersonal skills – you need to be able to function in diverse environments
  • Know how to deal with adversity – it will happen on every team
  • Be a good team mate – don’t worry about who gets the credit

Next week: Alabama football coach Nick Saban on what it takes to win.
