Leadercast

Today I am kicking off my annual collection of wisdom and inspiration from Leadercast, a day long leadership development event simulcast live around the world from Atlanta, Georgia. The 2016 theme was “Architects of Tomorrow; Unleash the visionary leader within you.” The speakers this year were not quite the caliber of previous sessions (no U.S. Presidents, First Ladies or Nobel Prize winners!), but it was, nonetheless, an inspiring day. (Click here for links to 2015 posts on “The Brave Ones.”)

The day started with the charismatic Andy Stanley speaking about vision and clarity. First, he defined the terms as he sees them and then shared four tips to help make vision stick. Below are some highlights captured in my notes

  • While most people want integrity in their leaders, what people actually follow is clarity. A clear vision is magnetic.
  • A leader’s vision is a mental picture of the “what” we are trying to do. A compelling “what” statement gathers the momentum to figure out the “how.” A vision is the mental picture of what could be, fueled by the conviction of what should be; also known as a “preferred future.”
  • Clarity results in influence which is the essence of leadership.
  • How to make vision stick:
    • State it simply – memorable is portable; incomplete and memorable is better than complete and forgettable
    • State it convincingly – name the problem, offer the solution, explain why to move the heart
    • Repeat it regularly – vision leaks, reinforce it often
    • Celebrate it systematically – what is rewarded is repeated
