This is the second installment of notes from this year’s Leadercast.

Kat Cole is the Group President of FOCUS Brands which includes Carvel, Cinnabon, Auntie Anne’s and several more well known food brands. What I particularly enjoyed about her presentation was the very personal stories she shared from her life’s journey and how they influenced her as a business leader. Here are some of the highlights from my notes:

  • The people closest to the action know what the right thing to do is. Close the gap between you and the front line and you will have the power to really do something.
  • It’s important to focus on the right thing. After getting input from your team, you have to make some changes. The delicate choice is that the change needs to be something small enough to change but big enough to matter. Choosing the right first thing will drive the group forward.
  • The power of knowing what is possible is the heart of driving vision. Create influence by showing people what might be possible. Don’t tell them, help them get there to see it for themselves.
  • Progress can be blinding. Just because you’ve made some things better does not mean you don’t have the obligation to continue making things better.
  • Employ the “Hot Shot” rule. If a “hot shot” took over your role today and looked at what you’ve been doing in that role, what is the first thing they would change? Why do you have to wait for a hot shot to do it?
