Unlock the Door

This is the third in a series of posts with notes from the Columbus Women in Leadership Symposium. If you’re a business professional in Ohio, consider joining the Ohio Diversity Council and the Ohio Diversity Council Network on LinkedIn. We would love to have your voice in the conversation! If you are outside of Ohio, check out the National Diversity Council at this link.

Topic: Positioning Yourself for the Next Big Opportunity

  • Be willing to go where the opportunities are. Sometimes, that may mean a step back. Sometimes that may mean across the country.
  • Be prepared for the changes the next step may mean for your life outside of work. Are you willing to accept those changes? Not everyone is suited for every job.
  • Do you have a mentor, sponsor or at least a role model? Pay attention to what they do and how they do it.
  • Know your accomplishments! What you do vs. what you’ve done is part of your brand. Accomplishments are not just doing your job; that’s an expectation. What have you done above and beyond your job that brings added value to the organization?
  • Nurture your connections so they think of you when they have an opportunity. Be relevant. Give them something they need. Be memorable, in a good way.
  • Use LinkedIn for professional networking. Think about what your photo and the content of your page say about you. Your next opportunity may arrive…or pass you by…because of what someone sees on the site.

What steps do you take to be ready for your next opportunity?
