Your Voice

This post continues the April series of notes from the Columbus Women’s Leadership Symposium, presented by the Ohio Diversity Council. Last week, I shared notes on the discussion titled “Stop Networking and Start Making Connections.”

This week’s topic: Finding and Owning Your Voice

  • Your voice is part of your personal brand. You may not own the room, but you must own your voice.
  • When we lift our voice up, it is important to be confident in what we are saying. Be prepared. Be on point.
  • If we don’t speak up, we are omitting a decidedly important opinion.
  • Be passionate, but no table-pounding.
  • Be strategic so your voice is heard, both literally and figuratively. Sit near the middle of the room or conference table. Do not sit in the back of the room.
  • Look out for other women in the room. Let their voice be heard, too.

That last point is so important. We are a community, not a competition. What is your experience with ensuring that your voice – and the voice of other women – is heard?
