While many people make resolutions for the new year, I have found that choosing one word as a personal focal point works better for me. One word is easy to remember, is very clear, and remains top of mind much moreso than a list of “I resolve to…” statements. At least, for me.

I was inspired a few years ago by the book, One Word, written by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page. It is a great read for individuals and can also serve as a terrific teambuilding activity* at work. If you haven’t read it, I strongly encourage you to. In 2014, my one word was doing, as in not just thinking, not just planning and not just talking, but actually doing. In 2015, my one word was elevate. The focus was two-pronged; elevate my own skills and elevate the emerging leaders I come on contact with.

For 2016, my one word is commit.

I’ve been involved in a lot of interesting and some challenging activities since I left full time employment. I believe it’s time to take some of those activities to the next level. That takes drive and the willingness to commit. And committing means to keep going when the going gets tough. To risk failure in order to succeed. To keep moving forward, no matter what. To reach a goal and then set an even higher goal. To fully dedicate myself to living healthy, growing my business, and enjoying life with my family.

As stated in the opening of the One Word Promise:

  • I promise to live out my One Word with commitment and intentionality this year.
  • When I live out my One Word, I will become a positive force in the world and make a greater impact.
  • I will use my One Word as a filter to provide laser-like focus and to help me live with power, purpose, and passion.

I know from experience that the one word practice works. I can’t wait to see what new possibilities open up this year by focusing on the word commit.

What is your one word for 2016?

Commit
