(This continues a series of posts sharing insights I gained from this year’s Leadercast event.)

Ed Catmull is the co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, president of Pixar Animation and Disney Animation, and the author of Creativity, Inc. He spoke about how “The Brave Ones” are also the creative ones. Here are a few of his thoughts that stood out as being relevant in any setting:

Creativity is how we solve problems. As leaders, we need to focus on how to develop more creativity in our organizations. More creativity, better solutions.

If you give a good idea to a poor team, they will screw it up. If you give a poor idea to a good team, they will fix it or scrap and come up with a good one. It’s not about the idea, it’s about the team.

The magic happens when ego disappears and people focus on the problem.

Failure is a necessary consequence of trying something new. It is better to fix a problem that trying to prevent all problems.

Make the future, don’t just exist in it.

What role does creativity play on your team? How does the magic happen at your workplace?
