Last week, I participated in the 2015 Columbus Women in Leadership Symposium, presented by the Ohio Diversity Council. The event theme was “Celebrating Leadership: The Power of Women in the Workplace.” Impressive wisdom, experience and insights were shared by my fellow speakers. Here are a few snippets for your ponderance. I’ve listed the speaker, her title, organization and topic.

Becky Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer, Bob Evans Farm; Leadership Beyond Survivor: Using the Power of Alliances

  • Building trust through consistent behavior is key to building alliances and successful collaboration
  • Compromise is a step down; collaboration is a step up
  • Command and control leadership doesn’t work; servant leadership is most effective

Amy Shore, President, Nationwide P&C Exclusive Distribution; Great Leadership: Creating Change for the Better

  • Prepare yourself first; your heart and head need to understand why the change is necessary
  • Lead others through the change; communicate them hope, stability, compassion and build trust
  • Then, lead the business through the change

Kelli J. Scott, Chief Diversity Officer, Mount Carmel Health System; A Woman’s Guide to Success: Developing and Balancing Self Confidence

  • Build relationships before you need them
  • Know your strengths, use them and build on them
  • Have a personal vision and a plan to achieve it; remember that baby steps do work

Shelley Bird, EVP, Office of the CEO, Cardinal Health System; Stop Playing Safe: Courageous Actions to Create a Brighter Future

  • People tend to play it safe out of fear
  • Fear assigns a negative outcome to a future event
  • Conquer fear through courage, confidence and competence

My topic was Purposeful Life: Living and Following Your Dreams, which I wrote about in last week’s Tuesday Tidbit.
