Veterans Day is an important day in our family.  My son proudly served as a member of the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army.  When the 09/11 attacks happened, Matthew was in basic training.  The next four years were far different than I imagined when he enlisted as a senior in high school.  My son bravely served three overseas tours; two in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

Today, I am thankful for the men and women who courageously and selflessly served in the U.S. military.

Would you like to share your thanks?

Why We Celebrate is a campaign that my daughter and son-in-law started earlier this year to help keep military appreciation in our July 4th celebrations.  This month, they partnered with the VFW and the Return The Favor campaign to do the same for Veterans Day.

How can you help?

  • Tweet your gratitude using the #WhyWeCelebrate or #ReturntheFavor hashtags. Those messages will be pulled into the wall. Consider adding #TYT, the Thank You Thursday hashtag.
  • Write a blog post and share the link on the wall. (When you get to the wall, you’ll see a red button on the left that says “Add Your Post.”
  • Upload a video or photo to the wall.
  • Share the Return the Favor video message.
  • Share photos, videos and memories on the Why We Celebrate Facebook page
  • Make a tax-deductible donation to support the VFW Foundation’s programs and services. Just $10 allows 25 servicemen overseas to make a phone call home to their loved ones.

Please tweet, post on the VFW wall, share a photo or video.  Remember why we celebrate and return the favor by thanking our veterans, especially today and all this month, for their service on our behalf.

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. -William Arthur Ward
