On March 1, I shared that my husband and I were making a significant change to our eating habits, refraining from foods with added sugar. Six weeks later, I’m down nine pounds and, surprisingly, don’t miss the sugary foods…too much!

The first fourteen days of the “Zero Sugar Diet” has some strict guidelines. No added sugar at all. What I found, though, was that it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. There was one day where I would have sold my soul for a peanut butter cup but, otherwise, it wasn’t that hard. I’m generally a person who handles a structured diet pretty well so I just followed the plan. Even now, six weeks later, I still avoid added sugar in my day-to-day even though we are allowed some, within reasonable guidelines.

The proof is in the (sugar-free) pudding!

I feel better. I’m most definitely eating better; lots of fresh veggies and fruit, high fiber and high protein foods with minimal processing, if any. My clothes fit better; some are even a little loose. As for my health, we’ll see what a difference it makes when I go for my annual check-up in a couple months.

Here’s an update on the other #AgingWell changes I’ve made toward my goal of being healthier when I hit sixty later this year…

  • Water continues to be my Achilles heel though I am doing so much better than before. My goal is to drink 100 ounces a day. I usually hit about 80. I try anew every day.
  • Back in January I vowed to eat at least one piece (or one cup) of fresh fruit every day. I’m a champ at this one! With the shift to the Zero Sugar Diet, I actually eat three times that much every day!
  • My very first #AgingWell commitment of the year to walk 30 minutes every day happens much more than not. Typically, it’s longer than that as I try to watch the daily White House press conference on my iPad while I’m walking (working out the stress as Sean Spicer creates it!). With warmer weather, I love walking outdoors instead. The route I walk in my neighborhood takes about 50 minutes, so I’m good there.

My next change, actually, my latest change, is for another post later this week. Hint: ACV.

What are you doing to age well and live healthy?
