A lot of conversation was taking place yesterday about three current events items, all important for very different reasons.

It was the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, noting this year is also the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I have a dream…” speech. Our nation paused to commemorate the inauguration of President Obama as the leader of our great country. The Harbaugh brothers were being celebrated for leading their respective teams to the Super Bowl.

Being the news junkie that I am, here are some quotes from each event that can also relate to what we do each day.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We understand that outworn programs are inadequate to the needs of our time. So we must harness new ideas and technology…and empower our citizens with the skills they need to work harder, learn more, reach higher.” – President Barack Obama

[As a coach] “You want to get the most from the least and get the best from the best.” – Trent Dilfer, former Baltimore Ravens quarterback, speaking on the importance and purpose of coaching.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“We are made for this moment and we will seize it so long as we seize it together.” -President Barack Obama

“You have to look forward. Going out on the field frantic isn’t going to help. You have to stay calm. You have to try to lead your team.” – Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers quarterback commenting on leading the team when they were down 17-0 early in Sunday’s game.

These quotes inspire me. What quotes inspire you?

Tuesday Tidbits are weekly messages I send to my leadership team. They are generally short & sweet, often focused on leadership or teamwork, always positive and, hopefully, motivational. I hope you also find some meaning in them.
