Is service to others the ultimate calling in life? I think so. Whether it is a parent raising a child, a leader developing a follower, a soldier protecting a citizen, or a person giving to their community, dedication to serving others surely adds much joy and satisfaction to one’s life.

Two weeks ago, one of my clients wrapped up a “Greater Than Yourself” book club for a group of leaders committed to elevating their team members. One week ago, I completed our local Citizens’ Police Academy, so impressed with the dedication the police officers have to our community. Yesterday, our country observed Memorial Day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives in military service. In just a few weeks, I will be spending a week at Ohio Business Week as a volunteer working with teenagers intersted in a business career.

So many related events in such a close timeframe inspired today’s tidbit. Here are some of my favorite quotes about service for your consideration:

Be of service. Whether you make yourself available to a friend or co-worker, or you make time every month to do volunteer work, there is nothing that harvests more of a feeling of empowerment than being of service to someone in need. -Gillian Anderson

I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy. -Rabindranath Tagore

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. -Mahatma Gandhi

There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed. -Woodrow Wilson

In what way do you serve others? What inspires you?
