Authenticity is...

My January 1 post introduced “authenticity” as my #OneWord for 2017. Why didn’t I choose the more common “authentic”? There is a subtle, but important, difference between the two words.

authentic: of the same origin as claimed; genuine

authenticity: truthfulness of origins, attributions, commitments, sincerity and intentions

When I think of those two definitions, I view them this way: the first is a fact and the second explains why. For example:

That is an authentic van Gogh painting. Its authenticity can be seen in the bold palette, brush stroke textures, and a feeling of movement and strong emotion.

To me, authenticity is a complete state of being. It’s not enough to just be real, so to speak. Proof is required through a genuineness in personal interactions, in choosing and keeping commitments, in personal behavior, in thoughts and words, even in disagreements and their resolution.

One byproduct of personal authenticity is an unspoken invitation to others to also stand in that state. If my life exists in authenticity, then the people I interact with are naturally also held to that standard. This may lead to some difficult conversations about accountability but I believe, as always, the good in people will outweigh and outshine those challenges. I believe that if I stand firmly in authenticity, you will feel comfortable enough to do the same. Then, the door will open to trust, commitment and, ultimately, joy.

Imagine what might be possible if each of us lived our life in authenticity!
