This post continues the series sharing my notes from 2016 Leadercast. The series wraps up next week.

Commander Rorke Denver is a former Navy Seal Commander, author, actor and a great patriot. His presentation was definitely rooted in his thirteen plus years in the military as he continues to use the lessons learned during that time to teach leadership and motivate teams of all types. Keep that framing in mind as you read the highlights below!

  • Leaders often think their role is about the sword, being on the offense or in attack mode. But, really, leadership is about the shield, protecting others.
  • Rorke shared what he calls “Three Trident Takeaways”
    • Win the gun fight first – do what needs to be done now
    • Play without a safety net – you’ll be better prepared for the real thing
    • Keep ’em guessing – 90% of a leaders behavior should be predicable. 10% of the time, throw a curveball
  • Do the small menial tasks yourself sometimes. Get in the trenches with the troops.
  • If you can’t explain an operation (an issue) on one piece of paper, you don’t understand it well enough.
  • Two of Rorke’s American Grit team members shared lessons learned from the experience of working with Rorke on the TV competition:
    • The danger is real but fear is a choice. Always hold your head up high. (Hayes)
    • The best thing Rorke said to her was, “I believe in you, now you need to believe in you.” -Goldie
