Navy Seal Charles Keating IV lost his life on May 3, taking a direct hit, while rescuing a dozen American military advisors who came under attack by ISIS. Perhaps because I spent four years as an “Army Mom,” I am always interested in the back story of the men and women who are willing to give their all – literally, life – in the service of our country.

While listening to the news yesterday, I heard this comment made about Keating:

He joined the Seals because it was the hardest thing he could do.

Read that again…”because it was the hardest thing he could do.

Think about this: How do you show up at work? In life? What do you take on and why? Do you raise your hand for an assignment because you can do it? Because it won’t be too hard? Because there might be recognition? Because it’s a good career stepping stone?

Or, do you raise your hand for a project because it’s a real challenge? A learning and growth opportunity? A chance to lead by serving? Because the mission is critical to the organization? Because it’s the hardest thing you can do?

Next time you have an opportunity to jump in, think about your motivation…and Petty Officer First Class Charles Keating IV. May he rest in peace.
