This is the final installment in the April series of notes from the Columbus Women in Leadership Symposium, offered earlier this month by the Ohio Diversity Council. I hope you have found some inspiration in reading them; consider sharing them with your team, too. You might even start an interesting conversation!
Topic: Keys to Finding the Courage to Lead
- Be authentic – that is your best self. Deep self-awareness is necessary so you understand why you show up the way you do.
- Leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about asking all the questions. Don’t impose your will; instead, create the space for your team to explore and discover.
- Be vulnerable. Learn to trust your team to do the “stuff.” Know when to seek help.
- Be purposeful about your executive presence. We judge ourselves based on our intentions; others judge us based on our behavior. What are they seeing in you?
- Build a personal board of advisors. Include a mentor, a coach, a truth-teller and an influencer. Keep evolving to meet ever-changing business and team needs.
What else would you add to the list? What courage do you see in the leaders around you?
