Newspapers

Below are links to five of the articles relating to leadership that caught my eye last month. Grab a coffee, turn off the phone, enjoy the reading and then share with the leaders around you.

  1. I really like this first article from HBR.com, but I would rename it. Instead of “To Motivate Your Employees, Do 3 Things Well,” I think it’s really 3 Ways to Show You Care About Employees. What do you think about these three: inspiration, kindness and self-care?
  2. The Washington Post shared highlights and video of Sheryl Sandberg’s Latest Thoughts on Women, Work and Equality, comments she shared at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Please take the extra two and a half minutes to watch the accompanying video, too. Some of the trends Sandberg speaks of are fascinating.
  3. Levo.com is geared toward recent college grads but don’t let that steer you away from reading this next article. FastCompany.com republished “College Grad Correspondent: Saying Goodbye to the Comfort Zone” because it offers valuable food for thought regardless of where you are in your professional journey. Read the article and then consider: does your comfort zone limit you?
  4. In another HBR.com article, we are reminded that Leadership Is A Conversation. The point is that leadership is a personal relationship and leaders must take specific steps to keep it that way. I really like this insightful statement: “Physical proximity between leaders and employees isn’t always feasible. But mental or emotional proximity is essential.”
  5. In On Leadership: Actually Meeting The Goals, the Los Angeles Times helped us shift from setting goals to achieving goals. Read the article for a short list of books to support that adjustment. I like that it includes authors from different arenas; sports and politics as well as business and academia.

Well, that’s my January top five. Which one stood out for you?
