“What was the moment when you knew you made it?”

That was a question radio host Hoda Kotb posed to actress and advocate Laverne Cox Wednesday afternoon.

How a person reflects back on their life fascinates me. There is usually a great narrative behind turning point moments. Those backstories is where the character of the individual is revealed and lessons are learned.

I was curious how Ms. Cox would respond. After all, she has a very interesting personal story having been a trailblazer for the transgender community and an accomplished actress. Was the pivotal moment when she became the first openly transgender person to receive an Emmy nomination for acting (as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black)? Did she feel she had arrived when she landed on the cover of Time Magazine? Maybe her Glamour Magazine 2014 Woman of the Year recognition? Perhaps it was the 2014 GLAAD Media Awards when she recieved the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her advocacy work?

Her response was not what I expected and it was perfect.

After a brief pause, Laverne Cox said,

“I don’t think it’s happened yet. There’s too much more to do.”

There’s a lesson in there for all of us. No matter where we are in our life’s journey, keep moving forward. There is more to do. More love to share. More people to influence. More change to affect. More life to live.

What more do you have to do?
