Ahhh…the 2015 Major League Baseball season is upon us! The return of America’s pastime is one of the many great things about Spring. Growing up in north central Jersey, we were all about the Yankees and the Mets. Or, perhaps I should say, the Yankees OR the Mets; we had to pick one! Over the years, we have been blessed with many great teams, coaches and players. Did I mention the 27 World Series Championships? Yes, we’ve also had characters and controversy, but haven’t all teams?

What does this have to do with our everyday work?

Well, baseball is the very essence of teamwork and most of us need that to succeed. Baseball is a long season with 162 games; hopefully, we are all in for the long haul, too. Players – and employees – come and go, sometimes by choice, sometimes due to performance. The relievers, back-up players and average team members usually get an opportunity to shine and are often key difference-makers. Everyone has a role to play but sometimes have to sub in a different position and still excel. In baseball and at the office, there’s a manager and multiple coaches, but the real leaders are usually found on the field of play.

To further this comparison, here are a few quotes from Yankee greats that apply not only to baseball, but nearly any workplace. Now, get out there and play ball!

Competing at the highest level is not about winning. It’s about preparation, courage, understanding and nurturing your people, and heart. Winning is the result. -Joe Torre

There may be people that have more talent that you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do. -Derek Jeter

A person doing his or her best becomes a natural leader, just by example. -Joe DiMaggio

It ain’t over ’til it’s over. -Yogi Berra

The guy that’s finished working toward perfection is finished, period. -George Steinbrenner
