As time moves closer to Thanksgiving Day, gratitude is certainly in the air. I’m sure we can all think of many things we are thankful for. This is not your typical Thanksgiving post, however.

Over the weekend, after I sent some food for thought questions to a former team member, he texted me back, “I can always count on you for the tough questions…”  I appreciated that comment very much as I am trying to help him focus, grow and lead from afar, now that I am retired. So, in keeping with his sentiment, here is a tough question for all leaders to think about:

Are your team members thankful to have you for their boss (leader)?

If you aren’t sure, here are some food for thought questions for you:

  • Do you show that you care about your team members as human beings first, not just as employees?
  • Do you inspire your team members to contribute their best effort every day?
  • Do you share a clear vision for what the team is working toward?
  • Do you welcome new ideas?
  • Do you encourage your team members to challenge you, the process, or the plan?
  • Do you willingly share your knowledge, skills and contacts?
  • Do you find ways to prepare your team members for their next job? (Maybe yours?)
  • Do you thank your team members for their contributions to the team’s success?

After considering that list, you can probably answer the first question.  Are your team members thankful to have you for their boss (leader)?

If the answer to any of the above questions is “no,” you know what to do next. Be thankful for an opportunity to reflect, learn and grow.
