an-enemy-called-averageMy leadership library is one of my favorite things. I have well over 300 books on various topics relating to leadership, communication, change management, teamwork, etc. I love to randomly pull down a book, flip through the pages, and see what draws my attention.

Sunday, the book was “An Enemy Called Average” by John Mason. It’s an easy read; a lot of short sections, inspirational pictures, full page quotes. I landed on page 85 in Chapter 20, titled “When you refuse to change, you end up in chains.”

Here is an important excerpt:

There are three things we know about the future: First, it is not going to be like the past. Second, it is not going to be exactly the way we think it will be. Third, the rate of change will take place faster than we anticipate…

…We should not let “the way we’ve always done it” interfere with the opportunities in front of us today. There is nothing that remains as constant as change.

Even the most precious of all gems need to be chiseled and faceted to achieve its best luster. So, don’t end up like concrete – all mixed together and permanently set…

Go with the flow. Be sensitive to the new things. Stay flexible and know you’ll need to adjust, move, correct and change to be successful.

Tuesday Tidbits are weekly messages I send to my leadership team. They are generally short & sweet, often focused on leadership or teamwork, always positive and, hopefully, motivational. I hope you also find some meaning in them.
