Life as a book
Yesterday, I attended the funeral mass honoring the spouse of one of my co-workers. It was a really beautiful Irish Catholic service, complete with bagpipes and Celtic hymns of blessing. The deceased had planned it himself after being recently diagnosed with cancer.
When it was time for the sermon, the priest began:
Every life is like a book. The people and events of our lives are the chapters.
The imagery of life as a book stayed with me throughout the day. I thought about it last night. As I was having breakfast today, it popped in my mind again.
Imagine your life as a book…
All of our lives start the exact same way, and so would our books:
Once upon a time, a baby was born.
Mom and Dad would be characters in the early chapters. Perhaps a brother or sister might be in the story, maybe grandparents, aunts and uncles. There might be a chapter called “Johnny learns to walk and talk” or “Suzi goes to school.” Later chapters might be “Jane’s first date” or “Joey’s first car.”
All of our books would have some drama and sadness. Maybe there’s a chapter called “Mikey fights cancer” or “Grandpa Ed dies.” Some of us might have a “Divorce” chapter or an “Alcoholism” chapter in the book of our life.
Just as in life, our books would have comic relief, too. “The time the Christmas tree fell over” might be a chapter. Another might tell the story of when “Jimmy broke the toilet.” My book would surely have a chapter called “Mom’s dieting, again!”
Some books might be very short, while others might be very long. Some of us may have a handful of characters in our book and others might have countless numbers of friends, neighbors, classmates, or co-workers develop important roles in our story.
All of our lives end the same way, and so would our books:
Then, she took her last breath and died.
Think about your life as a book. What chapter are you writing today?
You’re the author. The actions you take today will influence how your story turns out. Is there a character you would like to change? Is there a subplot you want to add or eliminate? Is your book turning out the way you would like? If not, what do you need to edit?
Imagine the possibilities!
